He was also a fine poet, and lover of jazz as well as classical music. So it was a strange coincidence, when, not knowing the song, "I found a new baby," I looked it up on the internet, and discovered it had been chosen as 'song of the week' (gift for the club). Keith often gave us a short rendition of this jazz number during intervals in our writing group over the years, singing and miming as he hugged his invisible guitar. To find it had been chosen days before he left us, seems amazing, as I believe it is not often played. This version did not have a vocalist, it was a 1953 version of Buck Clayton on trumpet, but it brought Keith back to me in all his sweetness. Another artist, Charles Carey, a great friend of Keith's from their early
days in The Royal Academy of Art, around 1951, also remembers that the first time he ever saw Keith, he was coming down the stairs of the Royal Academy with a guitar, singing: "I found a new baby." But for us younger members of our writing group that Keith New belonged to for so many years, and gave so much too, turning out fine poems, as well as his many wonderful art exhibitions, it is for the invisible guitar rendering as he came into a room, we will remember him by among other things. .So farewell dear friend, may your great spirit be surrounded by such music as this. From Cecily Bomberg, Candyce Lange, Anne Aylor, Wendy Perriam, Hume Cronin, David Wilson, with our love and appreciation.
And thank you to 'Song of the week for happening at the right time.'

Keith New, the artist and husband of Yvonne, father to Clarissa and Roxanne, grandfather to Max, and our great friend and colleage, died yesterday, aged 85, in London.
